Aer Lingus mulls new Dallas service

Postby Greg on Fri Aug 01, 2014 8:57 pm

Aer Lingus today said it is considering opening up a direct route to Dallas in Texas following the success of its San Francisco and Toronto services.

The airline's chief executive, Christoph Mueller, said the airline is intent on starting new routes and increasing capacity to North America after enjoying its best trading in at least five years and reversing a profit warning it issued in June, Irish American publication, Irish Central reported.

And in an interview with the Irish Independent, Mueller confirmed that new services are already on track and would come to fruition before he leaves the Irish airline next May.

I'll believe it when it's announced. Totally out of the blue and defies logic. But who knows?

Does seem a bit strange, but any new route will of course be welcomed. Perhaps 2 or 3x weekly to start off? But I would agree, let's wait and see.

There is a good thread on this on the DFW news sub-page here as well (not sure if/how mods can merge) but I will post the same reply I posted there:

Thanks for posting the link. That is a slightly odd article in my view as they throw in the somewhat random line about Dallas up top but then at the bottom note Texas in general with a bit more info.

While there are a couple of million people in Texas that claim "Irish" ancestry it is not like Seamus and his pals are flying back every year to see the olde country (kind of like the "French" in LA). Both Houston and Dallas have fairly low PDEW to Dublin. IIRC Aer Lingus has a big codeshare with UNITED so I would think they would also look at IAH to help try and fill the planes but I guess they could work something out with AA again in time.

Ireland is opening a Consul General in Austin next month to try to tap into the tech market so I presume there is some business demand. If BA had not started Austin I would actually think that would be a great niche market similar to what Icelandair does stateside.

Anyway, it would be great for Texas and certainly add some colour to the line-ups at DFW or wherever they choose but I just cannot see this happening in the near future or at least being sustained if they try. I hope I am proven wrong.
