Are the diagonal runways for freight, or just anything?

Any questions about DFW or any of its carriers?

Are the diagonal runways for freight, or just anything?

I never recall specifically having taken off or landed on one of the diagonal runways. Are they for freight only? What about the seventh, N-S runway that lies just below the 'arm' of the east diagonal runway? Surely they don't have commercial flights taxi all the way to/from that one, do they?

Also, how does one refer to runways here and on other aviation forums? It appears looking at the FAA diagrams that they have two designations, one for each end of a runway.

I've seen 13R, the diagonal on the west side, used often for passenger flights. The diagonal on the east side does seem to be more sparingly used.

The runways are designated by their usage. For example, when planes are in a "south flow," that is, taking off or landing to the south, as you will see when they float by you at Founders Plaza, then 18s are in use. When they are taking off to the north, they will be 36.

Runways are named based on their compass heading, and always 180 degrees apart. Hence 1 and 19, 18 and 36 etc.

Thanks Greg. I'm just past the age of automatically Googling every question I might have. Who would've thought asking questions of people might be considered "old fashioned."
