New Guy

Post by Huck »

Greetings all.

I am new to the area, and enjoy spotting via photography. I see there are a few active members, here, so I wanted to say Hi. Still learning about the area and where you can and can not shoot. I know founders plaza is a good place, been there a few times. Saw the cemetery but curious to know what kinda shots one can get from there as I havent really spent much time there.

If anyone is interested in meeting up at any of the locations anytime, let me know. I enjoy meeting other photogs and spotters. I just have a cheap old Nikon D50 for the time being, but still have fun.

Here is one of my photos from the 1st day I shot out there, looking forward to many more!

Huck,

Welcome to DFW Tower! I've shot from the cemetery on the west side once - you need low heat and a long lens. The cops rousted me out of there too. (I think there are 4 cemeteries on DFW grounds, actually) The one on the West side is Minters if I recall.

Founders is great. Rockwall Tim has a good spot on the east side where he gets good shots, I think near a DPS station. I've also been curious to shoot from the gas station on the northeast side for the East runway arrivals, but haven't yet. Zulu Lima put this sweet map together a while back:

Haven't seen him on the site in a while, but that map is still kind of a gold standard. I was at Founders last Sunday but the wind and my forgetting the sun shade on my lens cap conspired against me for good shots. I had to be happy with a few tail numbers for my collection instead.

Hello Huck!

As far as shooting at DFW goes there are many spots around the airfield that afford some nice shots....but the only spot you are guaranteed not to ever have a conversation with the authorities is Founders Plaza. Most other spots are fairly obvious...they may be near parking or terminals, freight buildings or ramp areas, on the road sides and the cemetery...etc. But don't plan on spending much time in those other places...plan your flights then shoot and scoot.

I shot this from the Minters Cemetery.

Some other shots from other locations... ;) ;)
